Maitetsu

Game cover: Maitetsu

Description

Maitetsu is a Japanese adult visual novel set in an alternate history Japan named Hinomoto where trains were the dominant form of transport before other technologies arose to replace them. Each train is controlled by an artificial being called a Raillord, anthropomorphized versions of the trains who appear identical to human girls. The player controls Soutetsu Migita, an orphan who has recently returned to his hometown of Ohitoyo upon learning of plans to build an aerocraft factory which will pollute the town's rivers. While rummaging through his late adoptive father's possessions, Soutetsu accidentally reactivates Hachiroku, a Raillord representing the Class 8620 steam locomotives. Together, the two set out to prove the superiority of trains, stop the construction of the factory, and restore Ohitoyo to its former glory.

The game features straightforward visual novel gameplay in which the player simply presses a button to advance the story. There is only one choice that the player can make, which determines whether the player will read Hachiroku's, Paulette's, or Hibiki's route first. Completing the three main routes will unlock additional routes for the other heroines (Makura, Kisaki, Nagi & Fukami, and Reina), which can be accessed from the main menu. After the seven aforementioned routes have been completed, a final route (the Grand Route) is unlocked. The game features Japanese voice acting as well as character sprites which are animated via the E-mote animation system.

The Japanese retail version and some downloadable versions of the game include scenes where the protagonist has sex with the female characters. The console versions (named Maitetsu: Pure Station) as well as the Steam version omit these scenes. At the request of the developer Lose, the Western 18+ releases still include some censorship compared to the original Japanese retail version of the game.
