Pentiment

Pentiment is a single-player narrative adventure game. The story is set in 16th-century Bavaria during a period of social upheaval and religious change. The player assumes the role of Andreas Maler, a journeyman artist working at Kiersau Abbey, who becomes entangled in a series of murders and mysteries that span over two decades. Through his choices, Andreas navigates tensions between peasants, nobles, clergy, and scholars, gradually shaping the fate of the town of Tassing and its people. The narrative is heavily influenced by historical context, drawing on Renaissance art, literature, and politics.

Gameplay focuses on dialogue-driven investigation rather than combat. Players explore hand-illustrated environments styled after period manuscripts and woodcuts, moving between the abbey, village, and countryside to speak with townsfolk and gather evidence. During investigations, the player decides how Andreas spends his limited time each day, choosing which leads to pursue and which conversations to prioritize. The information collected is then used to form accusations, though uncertainty and incomplete knowledge mean outcomes are never fully guaranteed.

Character progression is defined through Andreas’s background, which is selected at the beginning of the game. Players can choose areas of study such as law, theology, medicine, or languages, as well as practical experiences like crafts or travel. These choices open or restrict dialogue options and investigative opportunities, shaping how townsfolk react and what evidence Andreas can interpret. Growth occurs primarily through narrative decisions and social interactions. The game’s systems emphasize consequence and memory. Choices made in one chapter carry forward into the next, influencing character relationships, alliances, and trust. Villagers remember past actions, and events echo years later as the story spans multiple generations.
