Shiki Eiyū-den: Hito Ryū Densetsu

Description

Shiki Eiyū-den: Hito Ryū Densetsu (The Records of the Ancients -The Legend of the Man-Dragon) is an RPG based on, but not adhering to, Sima Qian's Chinese historical text Shiji (usually known in English as Records of the Grand Historian or The Grand Scribe's Records). The game takes place in a fictionalized historical Chinese setting. Jing Ke (ostensibly a major hero in the original literature), is retained as part of the gameplay experience, but he is only a companion, and the protagonist is newly-created for the game. Other party members can also be hired, including Guan Fei and Zhang Yu, whose names are likely taken from Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, military generals of the Eastern Han dynasty in real-world history.

Experience points are gained even if you flee from battle. Killing enemies does not drop money, you must earn it from selling items from enemy drops and chest-looting. A character's equipable items list is defined by their strength stat. There is also an element of puzzle-solving prevalent throughout the game.

The game contains several anachronisms that clash with its historical setting. For example, it features Qigong—functioning as a form of magic within the game—despite Qigong only becoming widely practiced in the 20th century. Similarly, it includes the "Golden Douyun," better known in the West as the Flying Nimbus from Dragon Ball. While the cloud originates from Journey to the West, that story is traditionally placed in the 16th century. In contrast, the game is set around 200 BC, making these elements historically out of place.
