Shinju no Yakata

Shinjuku no Yakata is a Japanese adult psychological horror/mystery visual novel with a gothic theme. The player controls Akinari Kugetsu, a university student passionate about Japanese architecture and history who is seeking a subject to write about for his graduation thesis. When his female best friend and fellow university student Asako Yotsutani reveals that one of her relatives owns an ancient Western-style manor deep in the Japanese countryside, Akinari offers to accompany her on a trip to the manor, hoping to take some time off from his studies while also possibly getting some inspiration for when he returns. Upon reaching the manor, Akinari discovers that it is home to four women: the maid Shiori Tomosato, the twin girls Imi and Itsuki, and the mysterious Rindou who never seems to leave her quarters. The atmosphere in the creaky old building suddenly turns sinister when Asako goes missing and Akinari learns that the fates of its occupants have been left in his hands.

Like most visual novels, the world is mostly seen through the first-person perspective of the protagonist, Akinari, but unlike most visual novels, the narrative is presented in a third-person format, with the narration referring to Akinari in third-person. However, the player is still in control of the choices that Akinari makes. Through the player's decisions, the story may branch off into different routes and culminate in different endings. In some sections, a map is used to select which part of the manor Akinari will visit. The game features voice acting for all significant characters except Akinari and contains explicit sexual content.
