Cave Crave
Description
Cave Crave is a virtual reality spelunking simulation focused on realistic cave exploration and physical interaction rather than traditional survival horror. Players descend into expansive underground cave systems where navigation, problem-solving, and environmental awareness are central, and the cave itself functions as the primary map to be learned through observation and memory.
Gameplay emphasizes physical challenges inherent to caving, including steep climbs, tight tunnels, unstable passages, and vertical drops. Players use tools such as chalk to mark routes on cave walls, hammers to clear obstructions, and ice axes to climb walls and ceilings freely without predefined paths. Equipment condition must be monitored and maintained to ensure reliability during deeper expeditions, reinforcing a sense of preparation and vulnerability.
The game features multiple modes that frame the core mechanics in different ways. Story Mode follows Jake, who explores the caves while retracing the work of his late father, a renowned spelunker, gradually uncovering personal and environmental mysteries. Tension is derived from limited visibility, headlamp battery life, and the physical strain of exploration rather than jump scares. Horror Mode, unlocked after early story progression, presents unfamiliar cave sections with reduced resources and heightened threats for a more intense experience. Tourist Mode removes pressure entirely, allowing players to explore curated cave environments, such as the Nutty Putty cave, at a relaxed pace with an audio guide. A time-focused Arcade Mode introduces route-based challenges built around speed, precision, and physical endurance.
Cave environments are constructed with irregular, naturalistic layouts designed to avoid repetition, supported by reactive details such as falling debris and dripping water. There is no built-in map system; players must rely on self-made markers and spatial awareness to navigate. Additional systems include breath management for confined spaces and future underwater cave diving mechanics.
