Shovel Knight: Dig

Description
Shovel Knight: Dig is a fast-paced, vertical-scrolling roguelite platform game that serves as a prequel to the original Shovel Knight. The story begins peacefully at Shovel Knight’s campsite, where his cherished treasure bag is abruptly stolen by the nefarious Drill Knight and his newly assembled crew of subterranean villains, the Hexcavators. Drill Knight and his minions disappear into a massive, rapidly drilled hole, causing the ground beneath the land to become unstable. Fueled by righteous anger and determination, Shovel Knight immediately grabs his trusty Shovel Blade and dives headfirst into the vertical chasm after the thieves, intending to pursue Drill Knight through his underground network, reclaim his stolen loot, and confront the Hexcavators before the entire land above collapses.
The core gameplay centers on rapid, downward descent through procedurally generated tunnels and themed biomes. Unlike the original's horizontal progression, the challenge here is vertical, requiring players to constantly dig downwards using the Speed Shovel technique while utilizing Shovel Knight's classic downward-pogo attack to defeat enemies and navigate obstacles. The experience adheres to the roguelite structure: each run begins with minimal resources, and death results in losing all temporary upgrades, sending the player back to the surface hub with only a fraction of their collected gold. Players must balance the urgent need to descend with the risk of stopping to collect gems, open secret rooms, and find temporary Relics that grant sub-weapons like fireball wands or bouncing axes. Crucially, a relentless, screen-filling drill chase mechanic activates if the player lingers too long in one area.
Between runs, players can spend their retrieved gems at the surface hub to unlock permanent upgrades, such as new armor sets that provide powerful passive abilities, or unlock new Relics that can then appear in subsequent runs, offering meta-progression that incrementally makes future attempts easier. The game features a new Knightmare Mode unlocked after completing the main story, providing an extreme challenge by stacking difficult run modifiers.
