Death by Scrolling

Game cover: Death by Scrolling

Description

Death by Scrolling is an action game with roguelike progression and continuous vertical movement. The game takes place in a version of purgatory where players must gather gold in order to pay a ferryman and escape. Each run consists of a sequence of scrolling levels that automatically advance upward while fire closes in from below. Contact with the flames or enemies reduces health, and death resets the run. If a player reaches a stopping point without enough gold, the game continues into a new biome, extending the run until the required amount is collected.

Players choose from multiple playable characters with unique attributes. Movement and item collection are manual, while combat is automated: enemies are attacked when they enter a radius determined by the currently equipped weapon. Weapons vary in range, rate of fire, and behavior, and can be freely swapped by picking up new ones found in levels. Additional items, power-ups, and environmental hazards influence pacing and strategy.

Each run includes random elements such as procedurally arranged level geometry, roaming hazards, and the periodic appearance of the Grim Reaper, who cannot be defeated and must be avoided. Levels feature minor puzzles, hidden objects, and destructible elements that may reward coins or gems. Between stages, temporary safe zones allow players to purchase upgrades, trade cards, accept optional side quests, and interact with NPCs.

Progression is based on repeated attempts. Permanent unlocks include characters, cards, and upgrades that alter future runs. There are optional daily objectives, secrets, and collection tracking. The game features a light narrative delivered through environmental storytelling, item descriptions, and humorous character dialogue.
