Distraint

Description
Distraint is a single-player 2D psychological horror adventure game. The story follows Price, a young man working for a powerful law firm who seizes property from vulnerable people in exchange for financial gain. His ambition for wealth and recognition compels him to compromise his morals. After taking possession of the home of an elderly woman, he begins to experience unsettling visions and disturbing hallucinations. These events blur the line between reality and nightmare, forcing him to confront guilt, greed, and the consequences of his choices.
Gameplay is presented in a side-scrolling format with a mixture of exploration and puzzle-solving. Players guide Price through a variety of environments, interacting with objects, examining surroundings, and collecting items to solve simple inventory-based puzzles. Unlike traditional survival horror, there is no combat or health system. Instead, tension is created through environmental design, sound effects, and sudden shifts in atmosphere. The puzzles emphasize logical progression rather than difficulty, keeping the focus on narrative pacing and mood. The game is structured into chapters, each centered on a different location or encounter that deepens Price’s descent into psychological torment.
Interactions with non-playable characters often reflect Price’s conflicted emotions, presenting moments where his ambition clashes with empathy. Visual hallucinations and surreal imagery serve as symbolic representations of guilt, fear, and greed. Dialogue sequences advance the story, with Price’s internal monologues highlighting his gradual realization of the cost of his decisions.
Later versions, such as Distraint: Deluxe Edition, introduced minor refinements including enhanced lighting and improved animations, but the core mechanics and story remain unchanged.
