Routine

Description
Routine is a first-person science fiction horror game set on an abandoned lunar base shaped by an early 1980s vision of futurism, with curving plastic surfaces, CRT displays, and retro-styled onboard computer systems. The game follows an exploration premise that gradually shifts into a struggle for survival as the station falls silent and signs of danger accumulate in its corridors, laboratories, and maintenance sectors. The environment emphasizes atmospheric tension through its presentation of deserted malls, deteriorating living quarters, long hallways, sudden negative spaces, and ambient machinery that blurs the line between environmental noise and potential threats.
Players rely on the Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.), a handheld multi-purpose scanner with modular attachments that can be discovered throughout the base. Although it can be used defensively, the device does not provide lethal force, making evasion and concealment central to progression. Manual save points, limited resources, deliberate movement, and minimal interface elements reinforce a cautious, methodical style of play. Puzzle-solving is often carried out under threat, requiring navigation between scattered terminals, scanning facilities, vents, and sealed doors while monitoring sound cues and environmental signals.
Hostile machines form the core of the game’s danger, operating according to behaviors that must be observed and interpreted to survive. Tension is built through foreshadowing, audio design, and encounters that rely on anticipation rather than spectacle. Enemies may remain unseen for long stretches, and Routine frequently uses the player’s familiarity with science-fiction horror conventions to heighten uncertainty. Moments of silence, distant mechanical reverberations, and abrupt door mechanisms contribute to a sense of constant vulnerability.
Story elements are conveyed through in-world documents, environmental details, and scattered correspondence found on computer systems. The narrative touches on themes of identity, consciousness, and experimental technology, drawing on influences from introspective science fiction rather than action-oriented horror. The unfolding mystery centers on the nature of the lunar base, its missing personnel, and the forces at work within its sealed sectors. Exploration, upgrading the C.A.T., and uncovering hidden information all support gradual advancement deeper into the complex, where new modules expand functionality and open additional paths.
