A Guidebook of Babel

Description
A Guidebook of Babel is a single-player narrative adventure game. The story begins with the player character dying in an accident and awakening aboard the Babel, a cruise ship that carries souls into the afterlife. Instead of moving on, the protagonist receives a guidebook that allows them to manipulate past events. By altering the small choices and circumstances of others, they create chain reactions that reshape the fate of passengers and the direction of the voyage.
Gameplay focuses on exploration and dialogue across the ship’s various areas. The player interacts with the crew and other travelers, collecting clues about their lives and concerns. The central mechanic is the butterfly effect system, where altering one detail in the past can ripple forward into unexpected consequences. For example, influencing a conversation, changing the timing of an event, or interrupting a routine may open new storylines or close off others.
The ship is divided into multiple locations such as cabins, halls, and recreation areas, which open up as the narrative progresses. Each choice the player makes is logged in the titular guidebook, which tracks the branching outcomes and encourages replay to discover alternative results. Unlike a traditional puzzle structure, decisions are less about solving singular problems and more about shaping overlapping narrative threads into different configurations.
Progression is nonlinear, as story branches can loop back into shared nodes or diverge into unique paths. Certain actions reveal hidden histories of the ship or its passengers, while others may abruptly alter their lives or destinies. The sense of cause and effect is emphasized by allowing the player to revisit and revise prior decisions, creating a layered storytelling structure rather than a single fixed path.
