A Plague Tale: Requiem is a single-player stealth-based action game. The story follows Amicia de Rune and her younger brother Hugo as they struggle to survive in southern France after the events of A Plague Tale: Innocence. Hugo’s mysterious illness, connected to the plague of rats spreading across the countryside, grows increasingly unstable, driving the siblings to search for a cure while pursued by mercenaries, soldiers, and the Inquisition. The narrative emphasizes their bond, with Amicia bearing the responsibility of protecting Hugo while adapting to a world that forces her into more violent choices.

The gameplay combines stealth, environmental puzzles, and resource management. Amicia retains her sling as her primary tool, useful for striking targets, distracting enemies, or breaking objects. As the game progresses, she gains access to a crossbow that provides more direct ways of dealing with armored opponents. She can also craft alchemical ammunition that can ignite fires, extinguish light sources, or manipulate rat swarms. Stealth remains the preferred approach, encouraging players to use cover, control patrol patterns, and create diversions to avoid open confrontation.

The rat swarms are central to the gameplay and serve as both a danger and a weapon. They move dynamically across the environment and respond to light and sound, requiring players to manipulate torches, braziers, and alchemical tools to carve safe paths. Swarms can also be turned against enemies by removing their light sources or breaking their defenses. Hugo develops abilities that allow him to sense and influence the rats, giving players temporary control of swarms or heightened perception of threats.

Progression unfolds across linear chapters that introduce new challenges and mechanics. Resources are scarce, forcing players to gather materials for crafting ammunition, tools, and upgrades. Workbenches allow improvements to Amicia’s equipment, enhancing accuracy, efficiency, or carrying capacity. A skill system evolves according to the player’s actions, with frequent use of stealth, aggression, or alchemy leading to gradual growth in those styles. This approach shapes Amicia’s abilities without relying on traditional experience points.
