Description

Offworld Trading Company is a single-player and multiplayer real-time strategy game centered on economics rather than direct combat. The story is set on a colonized Mars where corporations compete to dominate the planet’s fragile economy. Players step into the role of a corporate leader tasked with building an industrial base, exploiting Martian resources, and outmaneuvering rivals in a ruthless market-driven contest for financial supremacy.

The core gameplay revolves around harvesting resources and manipulating supply and demand. Players construct facilities on hex-based terrain to mine resources such as aluminum, water, and iron, which are then refined into more advanced goods like steel, fuel, and electronics. Unlike traditional strategy games, units and armies are absent, and victory comes from generating revenue and buying out opponents’ stock. Markets fluctuate in real time, so producing too much of a single good can flood the market and lower prices, while shortages can create opportunities for profit.

Players upgrade their headquarters to unlock more construction slots and production chains, which allow diversification and adaptation to changing economic conditions. Efficient use of limited claims is key, since placement decisions determine long-term profitability. Strategic upgrades, such as faster shipping or resource efficiency, enhance production while giving each corporation its own strengths and playstyle.

Markets can be manipulated through the shorting of stocks, cornering supply lines, or engagment in hostile takeovers. Black market actions allow sabotage of rival facilities through tactics like EMPs, pirate raids, or power surges, introducing indirect conflict. Auctions for new technologies, claims, or patents create additional opportunities for strategic bidding and economic warfare.

Multiplayer supports up to eight participants, with each match unfolding as a fast-paced contest of economic management.
