Description
Rec Room is a multiplayer social sandbox game with a focus on user-created activities and virtual reality interaction. The player assumes the role of a customizable avatar entering a digital recreation center, where the central hub acts as a meeting place and gateway to a wide variety of games and social experiences. Objectives are not fixed: players can choose to participate in structured activities such as cooperative quests or competitive sports, or focus on socializing, building, and exploring user-generated rooms.
Core gameplay revolves around interaction with the environment and other players. Movement and control vary depending on platform, but in VR the game emphasizes physical gestures, motion tracking, and spatial awareness. Standard activities include paintball matches, laser tag, dodgeball, and adventure-style quests with combat against AI enemies. Each activity supports different team sizes and rules, often requiring cooperation or competitive skill.
Social interaction is central. Voice chat, gestures, and body language are used for communication, and friend systems allow for party play and persistent connections. Moderation tools and customizable privacy settings provide some control over interaction, with options to restrict unwanted communication or limit access to private rooms.
Progression is tied to experience points and cosmetic rewards. Players earn tokens and items by completing activities, which can be spent on clothing, accessories, and customization options for their avatar. Inventory management focuses on personalization rather than functional advantages, ensuring that progression emphasizes self-expression and identity.
The game also incorporates an extensive creation system. Using in-game tools, players can design rooms, environments, and interactive objects. These custom spaces can be shared publicly or kept private, and many player-made activities expand the available content beyond the official games. Scripting features allow more complex mechanics, enabling the creation of new genres and challenges inside the platform.
