Higurashi: When They Cry - Ch.1: Onikakushi

Higurashi: When They Cry - Ch.1: Onikakushi is an updated re-release of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi-hen, the first chapter in the Higurashi: When They Cry series of visual novels. This version allows the player to choose updated character sprites in place of the original game's sprites, and to switch between English and Japanese at any time.

Higurashi is a simple visual novel without branching paths or choices, where the player simply advances the text to read the story. After finishing each chapter, the player unlocks a number of optional bonus scenes called "TIPS".

The protagonist in Onikakushi is Keichii Maebara, a teenage boy who has recently moved into the remote Japanese village of Hinamizawa. Keichii quickly develops a close friendship with a group of schoolgirls and joins their game club. However, he soon discovers that Hinamizawa harbors a dark secret, connected to the yearly Watanagashi festival and the supposed curse of the village's guardian deity.
