Microzine #20

Game cover: Microzine #20

Description

Microzine is an educational disk-based magazine published by Scholastic between 1983 and 1992. Each issue generally contains a simple adventure game, often with a Choose Your Own Adventure Style. Issue no. 20 contains:* Voyage to See What's on the Bottom - A Choose Your Own Adventure style game, where the player joins Dr. Canteloupe, the undersea explorer, as he attempts to find the lost continent of Atlantis. The player is joined by Nigel the dolphin, whom the player directs through a number of arcade sequences to avoid danger and find tablets. After acquiring tablets, the player must unscramble the letters to form a known cliche. The player must act quickly, or Canteloupe's former assistant Obmer will acquire the tablets. Strangely, the Atlanteans only speak in and understand cliches, as their language and culture was destroyed by overly cliched speech. If the player is successful, the Atlanteans grant the player the Universal Communicator, which allows anyone to speak eloquently.

  • Heros & Villains - A database of cartoon, TV, and mythical villains and heroes.
  • Interactions - an ecology simulation, where the player must set up an environment involving 3 types of plant life, primary, and secondary consumers. The goal is to prevent one species from becoming extinct or overpopulating the environment. The player must set different organisms' food preferences, reproduction rate, energy levels, and prey
  • Monitor Mystery - The player reads a short vignette and sees a picture of two girls birthday. They must answer 8 logic questions from the description.
  • Computer Stuff - Microzine data disk initiation
  • Letters - Letters from the editor, the programmer, and various readers

Of note, Issue 20 is the first to be written in machine code versus BASIC.
