Description

Microzine is an educational disk-based magazine published by Scholastic between 1983 and 1992. Each issue generally contains a simple adventure game, often with a Choose Your Own Adventure Style. Issue no. 24 contains:* Captains of the China Trade: A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style game with navigation puzzles and a trading component. Travel back to Salem, Massachusetts in 1806. You are a young navigator who has been given his first opportunity by the merchant Elias Hasket Derby, Jr. to command a trading expedition to the South China seas, with the goal to reach Canton, China. Along the way, the player stops in Cadiz, Cape Town, The Maldives, Calcutta, Sumatra, Jakarta, Macao, and finally Canton. The player must carefully navigate by entering longitude and latitude on a map. They must avoid British and French privateers, as well there is risks of going off course and being lost to pirates. The player must gather clues on how to enter Canton, and must make successful trades along the way to maximize profit. They also need to trade for an ivory box for Mr. Derby's daughter's dowry. The player is rewarded at the end of their journey with 10% of the profit.

  • Dr. Maxwell's Molecule Magic - The player tries to send a rocket to the moon by building sufficient air pressure. The player can modify the temperature, density, and volume of the Animation Lab: The player animates characters by moving and flexing their joints over several frames, and then replaying the action.
  • Monitor Mystery - A bicycle wheel has been stolen from Lenny D. Vinchy's Bike-O-Rama bike shop. The player must closely read a short story and accompanying picture, and then correctly answer questions about the mystery.
